On the water

Landmark Beach faces roughly west and gets a proper Atlantic sunset. Arrive by 6pm, grab a lounger near the shoreline, drinks around $10. Elegushi Beach has a wilder, louder version for $3 entry. For the calmest experience, take a sunset boat charter from Five Cowries Terminal in Falomo: two hours, split $200 among a group, byo drinks. Both beaches sit along the Lekki-Epe Expressway, roughly 25 to 40 minutes from Victoria Island depending on traffic, so leave by 5pm to be settled before the sky turns. Weekday evenings are quieter and the light is just as good, so skip the Saturday crowd if you can shift your visit.

Pick Landmark if you want a clean horizon and a drink in hand without haggling; pick Elegushi if you want music, football on the sand, and a livelier crowd that stays past dark. The boat charter is the one to book if you are travelling with four or more people, since splitting $200 across a group brings it under $50 a head, cheaper than two rounds of cocktails at a rooftop bar. Skip the jet-ski touts that circle the shoreline at both beaches near sunset; agree a price before you get on, or walk past them entirely.

On the bridge

Walking the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge at 6pm is the free option and one of the best photos in Lagos: cable-stay suspension, lagoon on both sides, skyline behind. Cyclists share the lane. It gets busy at weekends with joggers and families. No cost, no entry, just walk on from either end. The bridge connects Lekki Phase 1 to Ikoyi, and the walk across is about 1.4 kilometres, roughly 20 minutes at an easy pace, so you can cross and be back at your car within the hour.

Start from the Ikoyi end near Osborne Road if you want the sun setting ahead of you as you walk; start from the Lekki Phase 1 end if you would rather have it behind for photos with the skyline lit up. There is no seating and no shade, so bring water in the dry season months of November to February when the heat holds well into the evening. Traffic on the bridge itself moves fast, and there is no proper pedestrian barrier in places, so keep to the marked walkway rather than the road edge, especially with children.

Sky Restaurant and Lounge on the 25th floor of Eko Hotel on Adetokunbo Ademola gives you an aerial sunset with cocktails at $15 each. The George rooftop in Ikoyi is a shorter climb and a softer scene, $10 cocktails. Both accept walk-ins early evening, book for weekends. Eko Hotel itself, the Eko Hotel Main Building, anchors the view, so if you would rather stay the night than drive back through Victoria Island traffic, a room there puts the lounge steps from your door.

Sky Restaurant seats around 80 and the window tables go first, so arrive by 5:30pm on Fridays if you want a table rather than the bar rail. The George is smaller and quieter, better suited to a couple than a group of six. Skip both if the sky is overcast, since a hazy Lagos evening from the 25th floor looks much like a hazy Lagos evening from the ground, just with a $15 cocktail attached; check the forecast before you commit to the lift.

Further out, on the sand

For a slower version of the sunset, drive past the city beaches to the resorts strung along the coast toward Ibeju-Lekki. La Campagne Tropicana Beach Resort, about an hour from Victoria Island past the Lekki Free Trade Zone, has its own private stretch of beach and rooms from around $70 a night, so you can watch the sun go down from a hammock and skip the drive home in the dark. Jara Beach Resort, closer at roughly 40 minutes out, runs a similar setup with beachfront chalets from about $60 a night and a restaurant that serves grilled fish and plantain right at the waterline, a fair pick if a full night at La Campagne feels like more than you need.

Wavecrest Beach Hotel & Resort sits further along the same stretch and suits a day trip better than an overnight: day-use rates for the beach and pool run around $15 to $20 a person, well under the cost of a room, and you can still be settled on a lounger before the sun drops. Book any of the three ahead on weekends and public holidays, when Lagos families make the same drive and rooms sell out by Friday afternoon. Choose La Campagne if you want the full resort experience, Jara if you want a cheaper bed by the water, and Wavecrest if you only want the sunset itself.

When to go

Lekki sits close enough to the equator that sunset barely moves through the year, but the sky above it changes with the season. The dry season, roughly November to March, brings the Harmattan haze down from the Sahara, which mutes the sun into a soft orange disc and can hide it behind dust well before it reaches the horizon on the worst days. The wet season, April to October, clears the air between storms and produces some of the sharpest, most colourful sunsets of the year, though a downpour an hour before sunset can cancel the whole plan.

August is the safest month for a clean sky, sitting inside a short dry spell locals call the August break, between the heaviest rains of July and the return of rain in September. Check the forecast on the morning of your visit rather than the night before, since Lagos weather shifts fast in the afternoon. If you only have one evening in the city and the sky looks hazy by 4pm, move your plan to the bridge or a rooftop bar instead of the beach, since a muted sun still reads well against a skyline but disappoints against a flat horizon.

Getting there and back

Every spot in this guide sits within an hour of central Lekki, but the return trip is the part that catches people out. The Lekki-Epe Expressway backs up hard once the sun is down and offices and beach crowds move at once, so a 25-minute drive out can become a 90-minute crawl back by 8pm. Ride-hailing apps work across all the listed spots and cost roughly $5 to $12 for a one-way trip within Lekki, cheaper than most hotel airport transfers and easier than finding parking at Elegushi Beach on a weekend.

If you are staying over rather than driving back to Victoria Island or Ikeja, base yourself in Lekki Phase 1 for the bridge and Landmark Beach, or push out toward Ibeju-Lekki if you have booked one of the beach resorts for the night. Either way, leave the boat charter and rooftop bookings for a weekday if your schedule allows it; the light is identical, the queues are shorter, and the drive home on a Tuesday clears in a third of the time it takes on a Saturday.
