Ikeja is the Lagos State capital and the district around Murtala Muhammed Airport, on the mainland north of the Third Mainland Bridge. Ikeja GRA (Government Reserved Area) is the polished residential quarter with hotels, restaurants, and the Freedom Park cultural venue. Central Ikeja is louder, cheaper, and has the famous Computer Village electronics market and the New Afrika Shrine — Femi Kuti's ongoing venue for the Kuti family Afrobeat legacy, which is a genuine Lagos pilgrimage.

For a beach-club Lagos trip, Ikeja is not the base — you're 60-120 minutes from the Peninsula in traffic and it's a different city in feel. But it's essential for early or late flights (stay in Ikeja GRA the night before a 6am departure), for the New Afrika Shrine (Sundays only for the big set), and for cheaper rooms than the Peninsula. Prices in Ikeja GRA are $55-140; central Ikeja hotels can dip to $30-50 in the budget bracket. Cross the bridges early for Peninsula excursions.

By day Ikeja GRA feels almost suburban — quiet tree-lined streets like Oba Akinjobi, Isaac John, and the crescents off them, security guards on plastic chairs, generators humming behind hedges. By 9pm the calm holds inside the GRA itself, but Awolowo Road and Opebi Road light up with suya stalls, bukka joints, and the low hum of traffic still clearing from the airport road. It is not a nightlife district in the Lekki sense — no beach clubs, no rooftop lounges stacked three deep — but Opebi has a run of bars and grill spots that stay open past midnight on weekends.

Ikeja suits business travellers with meetings at the Lagos State Secretariat in Alausa, anyone flying at an odd hour, and music fans making the Shrine pilgrimage. It does not suit a first-time visitor who wants beach, boat trips, or a walkable restaurant strip within a five-minute stroll of the hotel — for that, base on the Peninsula and treat Ikeja as a day trip or a pre-flight stopover. Traffic on the Ikeja-Lekki axis via the Third Mainland Bridge or the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway spur is the deciding factor for almost every plan here.

Ikeja GRA is the sensible visitor's base — Isaac John, Oba Akinjobi, and Mobolaji Bank Anthony have hotels at $60-140 that are notably calmer than central Ikeja. For pre-flight nights, look at Sheraton Ikeja or the airport hotels at $130-250 for direct shuttle access. Avoid central Ikeja hotels around Computer Village if you value sleep — the market runs until midnight and reopens at 6am. Also confirm airport shuttle before assuming a hotel offers it.
